Though it is a large Karstic dolina, the glacial basin of the Fòses lakes is waterproofed by clay bottom layers, which allowed the formation of a large wet area with lakes and peat bogs, unique in the Dolomites. The wetland, of great naturalistic value, has rare, endangered flower species, relict of the Ice Age.
Length: 10.500 m.The waters from the higher limestone uplands of Fòses and Rudo, seeping through underground channels in the calcareous block that supports the plateau, well up in the plain of Cianpo de Croš. The beauty of the place is enhanced by the meandering rivulets of the Boite spring waters and by a rare wetland and bog flora.
Length: 1.800 m.The basin of Cianpo de Croš and Ra Stua is surrounded by a thin, magnificent sub-alpine forest of spruce and larches that ascends to Rudo plateau. Of little importance for the production of wood, the forest has aged and is rich in century-old plants which make an extraordinary habitat for woodpeckers and owls, like the three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) and the pigmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum).
Length: 4.100 m.Just over one hour walk from Ra Stua, the Alpe di Lerósa is uncommonly beautiful with its vast prairies and expansive views, for the morphology and colour of the surrounding rocks and, at the tree line, its century-old stone pine trees, extraordinary in their shape and size. No less important are the rich flora and fauna of Lerosa pastures where the golden eagle can be easily seen hunting for chamois and marmots.
Length: 5.000 m.Although these lakes, originated from a post-glacial landslide, lie very close to the state road, they are extraordinarily natural. Because of their recent formation, they have not yet developed a perilacustral vegetation belt, yet, their spectacular landscape is worth a visit and can be reached with a slight detour from the former railway path.
Length: 1.200 m.Rufiédo springs lie very close to Gotres forest road. When snow melts or after heavy rainfalls, their impressive flow capacity strikes viewers for the gushing water springs, the roaring and the halo of vapour that surrounds them. These Karstic springs convey the waters that flow underground from the high cirques of Croda Rossa.
Length: 1.000 m.Beyond Rufiédo springs, at the wild slopes of Ra Šares, winds Val di Gotres, blanketed with woods and rich in silence. Gotres stone-pine forest is one of the most beautiful mile-high forests in the Park, rich in fauna. The forest thins out on Gotres vast prairies in front of Valbònes amphitheatre and Lerosa col.
Length: 9.500 m.Parallel to the road, a hiking circuit leads to Ra Stua from both the right and the left orographic sides of the Boite, with beautiful views of the valley, which car drivers often fail to appreciate. Century-old forests and the spectacular sequence of waterfalls, formed by the Boite below the grazing limit of the Ra Stua basin, are worth a visit.
Length: 8.000 m.The rocky rise of Son Pouses is an outstanding panoramic viewpoint for its dominant position over the confluence of four valleys and Cortina's bowl.
Remnants of World War 1 infrastructure: huts, barracks, trenches, and tunnels remain in this location where Austrian strategic emplacements controlled the valleys.
It is also a vantage point to observe the golden eagle and an important floristic site.
Length: 4.000 m.Like Son Pòuses, the cliff of Podestagno enjoys a favourable position to control the communication routes between the Boite, Felizon, and Fanes valley. However, its settlement is much older, in fact archaeological surveys have documented a pre-Roman occupation of this site where different rulers followed one another and preserved a castle intended to control and defend the Ampezzo Valley. The access route follows part of the old Strada di Alemagna which climbs up its steep flanks.
