Lake of Limides is a small, charming lake, deeply set in an elongated depression to the north of Croda Negra. It has no tributary river and is fed by rainwater and thawing snow. The surrounding slopes are dotted with century-old stone pines, of spectacular, twisted shapes. The access route is across Falzarego grasslands with their beautiful flowers.
Length: 2.700 m.The ridge rising to the south-east towards Croda Negra and Averau is asymmetrical: to the north it lowers towards Limides and Falzarego with slightly sloping slabs, whereas it drops vertically over the moraines and the grasslands of Monte Pore to the south. It can be easily travelled along the ridge and features a few depressions near Col Gallina, where WW1 emplacements are well preserved and have recently been restored.
Length: 6.000 m.From whatever direction one observes Mt Averau, it appears as a trapezoidal monolith of Principal Dolomia, towering over the plateau below; an easy loop trail encircles its base. The numerous boulders surrounding Mt Averau are home to hares and ptarmigans and here the rare Androsace haussmanni grows. On the southern faces the endemic Campanula morettiana also grows.
Length: 8.400 m.The Cinque Torri, a group of rocky spires, are among the most beloved and visited sites of the Ampezzo Dolomites. This cluster of towers, of varied squared shapes, is the result of fracture and collapse of an old and a bigger Dolomite block. Highly frequented by rock climbers as practice gym, the walls are rich in endemic flora such as Campanula morettiana, Moehringia glaucovirens and Androsace haussmanni, and also nesting site of the wall-creeper (Tichodroma muraria). A beautiful, easy trail with spectacular panoramic views circumnavigates the foot of the spires.
Length: 2.200 m.The humid grasslands and the peat bogs set in the bowl to the of south Cinque Torri are an exceptionally well preserved biotope, with an uncommon florist richness that includes the Dactylorhiza traunsteineri orchid. Equally rich are Passo Giau grasslands, reachable from Cinque Torri by an interesting and varied trail, that circumnavigates Mt. Averau through moraine and century-old stone pine forest.
Length: 7.500 m.The northern slopes of Cinque Torri are covered by a high-altitude aged forest of columnar firs, larches and stone-pines, with some trees aged over 300 years. The forest floor, rich in rhododendrons and blueberries, is the habitat of many Galliformes species, such as the capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix). The way down from Cinque Torri to Bai de Dònes, through the Ra Landries forest, is an easy and fascinating walk, by the pleasant Bai de Dònes lake.
